Natural Asphalt Binder is a 100% biobased product, organic lignin powder, that lowers the demand for bituminous binder in asphalt products. It is a bitumen substitute by nature.
It can seamlessly integrate asphalt making processes and products, replacing part of the bitumen in the mix as well as increasing its binding and structural properties.
NABi acts as an anti-oxidant in the asphalt mix and enhances resistance to aging, rutting, and deformation while ensuring workability during application. Made from sulfur-free soda-like lignin, it has a natural odor. Its binding properties and anti-dripping behavior improve asphalt’s structural characteristics.
Our NABi solution comes in powder form and can be mixed with bitumen in wet or dry applications, replacing up to 30% of the bitumen needed for asphalt. In warm asphalt mixes (WMA), it serves as both a polymer and bitumen substitute, mixing at temperatures as low as 140°C to reduce energy consumption. NABi is suitable for use in all asphalt layers in the construction (base, bind and surface layers) and across various asphalt types, including AC and SMA, with applications in bicycle lanes, road pavements, roundabouts, parking lots, and municipal roads.
Enhanced asphalt performance: improved characteristics and weather resilience, improved rutting and cracking resistance, longer service life
Decreased used of energy: reduction in temperature during the mixing and applying, seamlessly integrates into existing production processes
More durable results: Improved structural properties, anti-oxidative, binding and anti-dripping characteristics
Increased sustainability: Lower carbon footprint, biobased and circular materials, renewable materials and local European production
At BMC, we strive to supply the highest quality possible and ensure the quality and safety of our circular materials.
We conduct thorough testing on our materials and to confirm that the highest standards are met for all of our batches.

Lignin serves as a binder replacement in asphalt, reducing reliance on petroleum-based resources and promoting the use of local biomass. This enhances sustainability by increasing the biobased content of the mix. As a renewable carbon source, lignin captures CO2 from the atmosphere and stores it indefinitely in road pavement when used as a bitumen substitute with NABi.
Our team has extensively researched biobased materials, particularly grass-extracted lignin, developing in-depth knowledge in this area. We leverage our expertise to enhance our partners’ projects, ensuring the best possible outcomes at every step. We provide support and advice throughout your project, from material selection to testing, quality control, and the application of materials.
Asphalt: Our NABi solution is designed for the asphalt market as a bitumen alternative and enhancer. It integrates seamlessly into any asphalt mix and process, functioning like bitumen. Its binding and anti-oxidative properties strengthen the asphalt structure and improve sustainability by storing carbon directly in the pavement.
Roofing solutions: Our lignin can easily integrate roofing solutions, where it can partially replace the fossil-based components and standard materials.
Other: Lignin can be integrated and replace various petroleum-based products. Some markets into which lignin can easily be used include adhesives, coatings, various chemicals, animal feed, cosmetics, construction materials and hotmelt among others.
